What is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address non-musical goals, such as physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual needs of individuals of all ages.

Music therapists use patient-preferred live music (country, gospel, rock, jazz, etc.) to meet a variety of goals which include but are not limited to:
  -  Pain and anxiety reduction
  -  Counteracting depression and elevating mood
  -  Improving communication and self expression
  -  Enhancing quality of life and spiritual comfort
  -  Improving perception of hospitalization

Arts in Medicine

The Arts in Medicine program provides volunteer opportunities for students and community artists. Its purpose is to promote the health and well-being of hospital patients and families through the relationships between the arts and human responses. It is a partnership between Florida State University, Indian River State College, and Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. It is designed to bring together the extensive resources of the IRSC arts and clinical programs with the Fort Pierce arts community to benefit LRMC patients, families, and visitors.

The Medical Music Therapy and Arts in Medicine programs were established as part of an agreement between Florida State University (FSU), Indian River State College (IRSC), and Lawnwood Regional Medical Center (LRMC).

As of Fall 2007, students can begin a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in music therapy at IRSC, where they complete the first two years and then transfer to FSU for their final two years. Students attend music therapy classes at IRSC and gain clinical experience/training at LRMC.

FSU funds the music therapy professor at IRSC and the full-time medical music therapy coordinator at LRMC, while LRMC provides funding for music equipment, resources, and intern stipends.
